Defining Film Education

Why should we bother about teaching film?

This big question has inspired a group of people from all over Europe, who believe passionately in the importance of film, to create a course to help us answer it.

Defining Film Education

Introducing Film Education

We have put together this course to help people understand the ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’ of film education. It is part of a project funded by the Creative Europe programme aimed at promoting understanding and appreciation of film called ‘Film Education: from Framework to Impact’. That project itself came out of previous work to design a ‘Framework for Film Education’ for Europe. This course uses many of the ideas, concepts and principles of this Framework, with examples drawn from across Europe.

We focus on film education almost exclusively in the formal education sector, with children and young people between the ages of 3 and 18.

The short film below sums up (in a humorous way we hope!) some of the clichés and assumptions about film and film audiences, and also we think points to some of the work that film educators undertake to do. There is a link to a transcript of the voice-over below.

Task

The opening task is to watch the film and think about whether there are other films you know about that help us think about ‘film education’. Write your immediate thoughts after seeing the short film in the notepad below.
